Misogyny Is a Mental Health Issue

 How did that title grab you?

Oh, I do miss the good old days when I used to blog regularly. One of the many pleasures was thinking up inflammatory titles like the one above. But, alas, life moves on and so must I.

However.

In my wanderings in the real world, I did come across an interesting video interview. In this video a male psychotherapist says, "Misogyny is a mental health issue." (Hear that Doug Wilson and Mark Driscoll? Your misogyny is a mental health issue. Not the oracles of God as you falsely testify.)

And while I was quite intrigued by the video, I can't say that I agreed with everything the Psychotherapist, Previn Karian, said. But I may very well agree with the above quote.

Before I go on, I must head off or at least address my critics and Wilson/Driscoll worshipers. I fully expect that if you so happen to click on the video link below that you will have a kneejerk reaction. I expect that you will rail against this psychotherapist for being a bleeding-heart liberal and a weak man. To this, I will assert that Previn Karian has more courage than Driscoll, Wilson, and any Theobro who ever Theo-ed. Here is the reason I think this. Karian askes question those other guys are too afraid to ask. He has a deep and profound honesty that those guys will never understand until they can ask the same hard question he does.

We may look at some of those questions ourselves. But at a later date.

While I don't come to the same conclusions as Previn, I do appreciate the questions he asks. While I don't agree with several points Previn makes, I am intrigued and respectful of his journey and the understanding that he has come to. I see that he is trying to make sense of the hatred and violence of men using the tools at his disposal. While those tools have their limitations, he makes great use of them.

Also, a warning. If you click on the link. He is very hard on his gender. So much so, it makes me cringe. He labels all men rather negatively, even though he asserts that he is not trying to shame men. In his deep honesty and frustration for the state of things, he lays into all men quite harshly. One of my places of disagreement with him is his view that all men are violent and want to put down women at their core. I struggle to agree with this because of the wonderful men in the various parts of my life. Family, church, and work.

The Sin of Empathy Book Review Followup

 Dani Treweek, the author of the book review on "The Sin of Empathy" has, as expected, received pushback from people concerning that review. And she answers them well here:

Her follow up does a good job answering the main, legitimate sounding complaints about her review.

She says lots of good things but I want to bring one thing to the forefront. Here is a quote from her writings. (There are many other good quotes touching on the same thing. I had to narrow it down and this one will do.)

when Rigney identifies empathy (weaponised, untethered, or otherwise) as the thing that leads to communities characterised by “cowardice, indifference, and cruelty,” the underlying reality he is primarily concerned about is a particular kind of sinful inclination (i.e., being emotionally swept away from reason and truth) which he sees as inherent to a particular group of people (i.e., women).

The reason I bring this up is because Treweek doesn't touch on something that I think is glaringly obvious concerning the total hypocrisy of Rigney, Doug Wilson, Canon Press (Doug's family press that published Rigney's book), and all associated with them.

Doug Wilson has displayed untethered empathy for pedophiles and abusers in his church. He is swept away by his own emotions and strong feelings that men are superior, more rational, more just than women. His feelings of superiority makes him indifferent to the horrendous amount of suffering he has caused and the injustice he has overseen against women and children.

In other words, Doug Wilson and his disciple, Joe Rigney, have untethered empathy for men, being a man, and all that this means to them, things like dominance, control, and power. Their empathy for the masculine to the exclusion and oppression of the feminine causes them a particular kind of sinful inclination as they are emotionally swept away from reason and truth. Their devotion to the cause and needs of men makes them blind to the importance and needs of women. They have such strong empathy for the masculine it boarders on worship. And through this weaponized empathy they have laid siege against all that is feminine. They attack not only the wayward feminist. They go after all women, because all women are falsely judged and found wanting in their toxic empathy for the masculine. This false balance and warped metric that they use to measure men and women makes them cowards, indifferent and cruel against women. The truth is, they are waging an unjust and relentless war against the feminine whether it's with the velvet glove approach Rigney tried (poorly) to do in his book or in one of Wilson's famous rants against women or "the bitch goddess of the state" (where Wilson almost channels Eric Cartman.).

Over on Facebook, I have gotten into several verbal disagreements with Doug Wilson and Joe Rigney fans over this accursed book. They keep saying something like, "You obviously haven't read the book because if you did, you would understand and wouldn't blindly and wildly criticize it."

In other words, they want me (and those like me) to buy the book. I let them know in no uncertain terms that Doug Wilson, Joe Rigney, and Canon Press will never get a single dime from me to fund their war on women.

Doug Wilson Compared to Crime Boss

 I've been listening to the Sons of Patriarchy podcast. It's been pretty good. But I've heard most of the stories before.

Today's podcast Immersive Communities: Abuse in CREC, part III presents three never publicly heard stories. All are worth a listen.

But one, in particular, caught my attention.

A former Chief Operations Officer of New St. Andrews College in Moscow named Tony had no idea what he was getting into with his job at Doug Wilson's college. He saw, first hand how the cult purposely mishandled abuse cases. When he advised going to the police with reports of abuse, he was shot down.

Tony had previous experience with inner city ministries. The neighborhoods he worked in had crime families that they had to work around and out maneuver. He said that working at St. Andrews was similar. This is found in the first 20-30 minutes of the podcast. If you get a chance, give it a listen.

Men Who Hate Women Should Not Teach the Bible

Maybe a better title should be, "Men Who Don't Understand the Love of God for both Men and Women have absolutely no business, whatsoever, teaching the Bible."

There are many such men. Mark Driscoll, formally an easy and frequent target of this blog is one. John McArthur, the man who puts women under church discipline for leaving abusive husbands is another. Then there is the new up and comer Josh Howerton who is very disrespectful of women.

The list is very long of men like these. And their raging, self-righteous followers are all over Twitter/X using the Bible as a club against women.

But today, I'm wanting to shine the light on an upcoming podcast series that takes on Doug Wilson, one of the most hateful men I've ever heard who claims to be Christian. Yes. He is even worse than Driscoll, McArthur, and Howerton. And according to WenatcheetheHatchet, Driscoll had early dealings with Wilson.

Do NOT Quote Driscoll on Social Media, Part 2

So, here is the outline the I made in order to explain to my work friend why Driscoll should not be shared on her Facebook. I started way back with my relationship with The Song of Solomon in order for her to see why I found Driscoll's take on The Songs to be so wrong, ungodly, and unholy.

 I was born again in 1982 through the charismatic renewal that was happening at the time. It hit many of the mainline denominations including Catholics and Lutherans.

We sang two songs that came from The Song of Solomon (hitherto referred to as The Songs) which established for me a connection to the long tradition of reading The Songs as Allegorical in nature of our relationship with God. The two songs were "We Will Rejoice in You and Be Glad" and "His Banner Over Me Is Love."

My family moved onto another church that was pastored by a Narcissist (though we didn't know it at that time. that word was not even used yet.) I won't get into this particular thing even though it is relevant to the story. But it was there that I met and married my husband (1987) and we were given the book "The Act of Marriage" by Tim and Beverly LaHaye. This book used The Songs as a physical guided to married sex. So this established the use of the Songs in this manner in a way that greatly overshadowed my previous/limited exposure to the allegorical side of the book.

Fast forward to the mid 90s. There was an outpouring of the Holy Spirit happening at a missionary organization in (name removed to guard my anonymity). During one of the sessions a frail, skinny, redheaded, young woman was in deep worship. She was responding to the intense outpouring by saying several things including, "We enrapture your heart, oh God," several times. As I stood to the side listening to her, my internal dialogue went something like this: "That's very nice sounding. But my Bible doesn't say that about us/me." But later when I looked it up in The Songs, it was there. And my next conclusion was that it might be in The Songs but that doesn't mean it should absolutely be taken allegorically like the redhead was doing. It was then that I felt impressed by God to start meditating on The Songs. But I resisted thinking that The Songs were just too racy for this small town girl. However, God shut up the whole Bible to me, even the parts that could prompt the greatest worship within me. Reading the Bible became like reading a phone book. The only scripture that I read during that time of resistance, the only Bible verse that sparked anything thing inside of me was Psalms 2:12 Kiss the Son, that He may not be angry and you perish on the way...

So I relented and began reading and meditating on The Songs. And what a blessing it was. It was an antidote and emotional protection from the shallow and self-serving love that I was receiving from my husband. It was also a healing balm for a previous and devastating rejection from a family of origin member.

I spent a decade meditating on The Songs and decided to look on-line to see if anyone else was getting so much healing from this book in the mid 2000s. This is when I stumbled upon the outrage and controversy caused by a message preached by Mark Driscoll in Scotland. The sermon was something about "The Good Bits" from The Songs. He was preaching an overly sexualized and, I would say, even pornified version so the Book. But the part that enraged people and felt like pig's blood in the Holy of Holies to me was when he told the women in that congregation than Jesus commanded them to get on their knees and service their husbands orally. It was a hard slap in my face for someone to take a healing book and use it to invade the privacy of the bedroom and command women to do an act that some women might find distasteful. Pun intended.

I got involved in on-line discussions concerning this and how far out in left-field Driscoll had taken his teaching on sex in the Bible. In these conversations, Driscoll apologists would show up, be rude and obnoxious, challenge us, call us prudes, and said we were squeamish over what the Bible "clearly teaches". They would also point out how smart and well read Driscoll was and that we were just jealous of his amazing teaching and preaching. One fellow, who was more polite than the others, agreed that the Scotland sermon was over the top. But he insisted that Driscoll was a great teacher and handled the book more graciously in his "Peasant Princess" sermon series.  He linked to an episode of the series and challenged me to go see for myself.  I went ahead and watched it. And while it was more toned down than the "Shock Jock Preacher" antics he engaged in Scotland, I was still dismayed by what he did to the Book.

Without getting into all the gory details, I'll point out a few major issues with his handling of the book. First off, he mocks, scorns, and ridicules the long standing tradition of looking at the Songs as an allegory of our relationship with God. Then, he seeks and "finds" symbolism of explicit sex acts under every rock and tree in the book. He also takes this poetic book, written mostly from a female point of view and about what made her feel loved and safe and morphs it into a pornified male-centric monstrosity mostly concerned with what a husband is owed from his wife in the bedroom. People who have left Driscoll's church had many complaints. One particular complaint was that Driscoll was trying to force women into a tiny submissive box everywhere but the bedroom. And in the bedroom, he was trying to force women into their husband's personal porn stars and nymphomaniacs, complete with stripteases and pole dancing. 

[I stopped at this moment to let my friend know that I actually didn't care if people had stripteases and pole dancing in their bedrooms. That was their business. My concern was with Driscoll making up commands concerning sex acts and deciding certain symbolisms in The Songs simply had to be about stripteases when this was highly unlikely.)

I wondered how this man was declared one of the top 50 pastors in the United States. So I took a closer look. Turns out that, besides using the Bible as a sock puppet that always agrees with him, he also has issues with rage, bullying, and fostering a cult-like atmosphere at his church, Mars Hill, in Seattle. While I was watching him and researching about him, he was credibly accused of plagiarism and of buying a spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

When his elders in Seattle tried to hold Driscoll accountable for his bullying, raging, and misappropriating church funds, he fled Seattle and went to Phoenix and started a new church there where he is in charge and answers to no one. No elders to get in the way of doing whatever he wants. He continues to "pastor" and "teach' and is hustling hard to be a huge, Christian online Influencer.

As you can see, I am unhappy with Driscoll, his history, and what he continues to do. However, abusers are gonna abuse and grifters are gonna grift. I am way more upset with the men who have propped Driscoll up, past and present, and have given him a platform. Christians, especially Christian "leaders", are woefully lacking in wisdom and discernment. Many Christian leaders may also be as lacking in integrity as Driscoll. They just aren't as blatant about it as he is. But God's sheep are paying dearly for the neglect of true pastors and shepherds..

So this is what I told my friend at work. And if you have been watching Driscoll as long as I have, you know that I haven't listed half of his blatant misogyny and sins.

Twitter is all abuzz with talk of Mike Bickle of IHOP fame, and what a flaming Narcissist he is. There are also portions of Twitter (yes, I know it is X now. It just looks better typed out as Twitter) taking on Doug Wilson. There are too many Narcissists in the pulpit. And it's not going to change unless the rank and file step up and scream "ENOUGH!" and take their tithes and offerings elsewhere.

No Quarter November Numbskull

 Stupid title. I know. But I'll get to the reason for it later.

That Moscow Mood: How much culture war is too much, for American Evangelicals?

Linking the above because I found that it summarized the crazy events on Twitter/X that dogged Wilson's No Quarter November antics this year.

WenatcheTheHatchet was the first to draw my attention to the fact that Driscoll was influenced by Doug Wilson early on. And I can really see that. If I knew where to find that post, I'd link it. May go back and do this eventually.

Anyway, why did I use the term "Numbskull" to describe Wilson? Because it starts with an "N" like No and November. Numbskull means stupid or foolish person. Wilson is not stupid. He is very intelligent. However, Wilson is not wise. He is quite foolish, and not in a good way. He is foolish in his words and thoughts and in the way he causes "The Little Ones to Stumble". He is foolish because he is oblivious to the millstone that he has been attaching to his own neck over that last few decades of his life.

It is true that I am angry with him for his abuses and for covering up the abuses of other privileged white men. But more than that, I pity him for his foolishness and misunderstanding of the heart of God for His children.

Which isn't strange since Driscoll links women pretty close to Satan. He has many examples like what Wenatchee lists in his post linked above.

Also, here is a quote from another source where Driscoll calls women who don't fit into his doctrine on womanhood Satan. It is under the subheading Family Division.

You could call these last two links off-topic, if you like. But I don't think so. It all stems from the same issue of celebrity preachers building up kingdoms for themselves and using God's name in vain to do so. These cult leaders are very controlling, ,manipulative, and often hate women.

Doug Wilson's Other Protected Pedophile

I guess Wilson has a special place in his heart for Pedophiles. He works so hard to protect them and keep them safe. He believes their lies and false repentances. He minimizes their sins while magnifying every small imperfection of the victims and, in some cases, the parents of the victims.

Perhaps Wilson should back away from doing church and open a foster home for poor, down-trodden, unloved pedophiles. This home could include a dating service or courtship service so he can find those pedophiles young virgins to exploit in marriage because those pedophiles obviously don't have the gift of celibacy and must marry so they don't burn with passion.

Joking aside, I am appalled at Wilson's actions in the Sitler case.

Now I'm appalled all over again as I'm finding out about Wilson's deep involvement in the Jamin Wight case.

When Doug Wrote My Father

I have not read all the way through the second. One of the reasons I have a blog is so that I can find these things later and look at them more thoroughly. But at first glance I see a young lady who is trying to love God and live right in spite of the being abused first by a pedophile and then by Doug Wilson.

The Patriarchs' Second Lie to Women

The first lie of the patriarchs is that patriarchy is the prescribed biblical way of doing families. This simply is not true. Jesus actually spoke against it. I pointed this out back in 2011 with the post I Heard It Said Once in which I gave scriptural proof that Jesus did not support patriarchy as the biblical model.

The second lie of patriarchy is that patriarchy protects women and children.

One of my top ten posts links to the story of Doug Phillips, formerly respected patriarch and patriarchy pusher. Katie Botkin's post In Which Lourdes Petitions for a Lifeboat, points out that Doug Phillips was the founder of something called The Christian Men and Boys Titanic Society. This society would commemorate the sinking of the Titanic every year "praising the patriarchal Christian men who sacrificed their lives in favor of putting “women and children first."

But as was seen Phillips was far more concerned with the perks of being a patriarch than any protection it was suppose to offer. He liked having the perk of a live-in nanny that he could sexually abuse rather than protect. When the story broke concerning this nanny he abused, he and his wife were ready to throw the nanny under the bus, or shall we say, push her out of the lifeboat so they could get in it.

This was over a year ago.

Now we have another patriarch who has proven that patriarchs are, indeed, not concerned for women and children, but rather are concerned with themselves, their positions, and their reputations.
Doug Wilson married a gullible young lady to a known pedophile. When it turned out that this pedophile abuse a son born from this marriage Wilson expressed concern for his own reputation and the pedophile. No mention of any concern for either the mother or child is expressed in his response to the criticism he has incurred for promoting and blessing the marriage.

Sarah Korchinski has created a lovely Maury Lie Detector meme that I what to share concerning the second lie of patriarchy.

So, no, Virginia. Not only is Patriarchy not biblical, it also does not protect women and children. It makes them vulnerable to the abuse of patriarchs, mere men who want to be worshiped as gods in their homes and churches.

SHAME on Doug Wilson!

And I say it again. In bold. Large font.

SHAME ON DOUG WILSON!

The man is NOT a pastor though he parades around as one.

The man is NOT wise though he fancies himself thus.

The man does NOT represent Christ or the Gospel though he thinks no one understands either as well as himself

And the man should NOT be revered by those who consider themselves leaders in the body of Christ.

Wilson's foolish, unpastoral, anti-Christian actions led to the molestation of an infant.

He should leave his pastorate and go far away into the wilderness in repentance and for penitence of what he has done as a supposed Christian leader.

I say it again.

SHAME ON YOU, DOUG WILSON.

So many are sweeping Doug Phillips indiscretions and resignation under the rug when they should be examining more closely the doctrine of his group that hands out oppression to women and children while setting men up as Lords and Kings in their home. There doctrine allows men to arbitrarily make life miserable or bearable according to their mode, personality, and disposition. And this doctrine forces women and children to stay in situations that are abusive and not fit for animals.

The Wartburg Watch had a post back in September entitled "Act Like Men-Are Driscoll/MacDonald Merchandising Manhood?"

That's a long time ago in blog years. So why is a certain fellow named 'Ryan' coming along and commenting on it yesterday,  on November 5th?

Why is he saying, "my sense is that manhood is under attack and virtually neutered from the modern mainline churches. Do you believe this is ok? God honoring?"

So Ryan feels attacked in his manhood, right?
And Ryan wants to know if I feel it's okay and God honoring for the mainline churches to attack his manhood.

Well, here it is. If manhood is truly being attacked, then, no, I don't feel it's okay or God honoring. The problem is, Ryan has offered no proof that this is going on. So I can't make a stand on this issue due to lack of proof.

Now, here is my question to Ryan.

Do you think it is right to, first of all, accuse everything you hate about certain worship services as being "effeminate" and then declaring that all these things are evil, thereby indirectly attacking the feminine and deciding that masculine rules while the feminine drools.

Well, this is what Doug Wilson does in his, "Your Worship Service Might Be Effeminate If..."

Also, Wilson is quick to blame anyone that he's mad at as serving the b!tch goddess of (fill in the blank as pertaining to whatever he's ranting about). This misogynist behavior is observed by Wenatchee the Hatchet in his "Doug Wilson almost channel's Eric Cartman."

Now, granted, the Wartburg comment thread is talking about Driscoll and MacDonald so one may wonder what the heck Doug Wilson has to do with any of this. Well I'm going to provide a link to a video of John Piper praising Doug Wilson while Chandler and Driscoll fist bump behind him. In the video, John Piper states at the 58 second mark (while Driscoll agrees with laughter and fist bump):

"Doug Wilson is one of the most careful and bright, reform, post millennial, objectivist, theologians around... and he's got people around him that are dumb. (laughter... fist bump... more laughter)"

So this is what Piper has to say about Wilson. That Wilson is brilliant and everyone else is dumb. Yet, as WTH points out, Wilson almost channels Eric Cartman (South Park) in his hatred and attack on the feminine.

I have proved that the feminine is being attacked in Evangelical circles.

What does Ryan have to say about that?
Is there anyone attacking 'manhood' in mainline denominations as vicious as Wilson hates and attacks the feminine?
I doubt it.
But I'm willing to see any proof Ryan can provide.
